JUST A CURSE

By Innocencia Mukwepere

Our ancestors have gone through it

And so, it is our turn

We cannot talk about it

Rather cry for ourselves

In caves of fear

Awaiting our only hope

The lineage is fading

With hymns of farewell

Wreaths circled around

Honouring our loved ones

Yet to come is the time

Will be next

Neither will it stop nor rest

Young and old it takes

Eager to unleash its wrath

For mercy it doesn’t show

Not long will it desert us

Leaving our mother bare

To it, status doesn’t matter

For every home is a vigil place

The poor, the rich

Souls it will feast

When asked why

They say,

It is just a curse to destroy
